"What on earth does “Not wishing to tinker with a winning formula, but evolving all the same” mean? The “novelty” they claim for 3 is that NV’s self-consciously disengaged female vocalists are joined on songs such as Master and Servant, Our Lips Are Sealed and Magazine’s Parade by some of the original singers (Martin Gore, Terry Hall, Barry Adamson). Elsewhere, God Save the Queen and Road to Nowhere are given the bluegrass treatment. It’s stupefyingly dull, self-satisfied and pointless. Tinkered with? Evolving? Who cares? Enough now".
But the saving grace of the albumis the artwork. The creation of the cover was a mixture of the digital with the analogue – for example, the numerals on the cover were designed digitally before being made in a4 plywood and then printed using an old flypress (a manually operated screwpress with a massive ball-weighted handle on top). To create the large text for the cover, Kendle used vintage wooden headline type bought on eBay, with the credits and additional label copy made using a junior typewriter. “Sore fingers,” is his comment on the latter process. Finally, the imagery for the cover was originally composed and optimised as digital halftones before being outputted as laser-etched woodblocks that were used for printing. All the elements are then brought together in the final album and singles sleeves. Which I don't actually like that much but I love the methods in which it was carried out.
