Oscar Diaz has designed a calendar that uses the capillary action of ink spreading across paper to display the date. Each month, a bottle of coloured ink spreads across a sheet of paper embossed with numbers, colouring them in as it goes.

Ink Calendar makes use of the timed pace of the ink spreading on the paper to indicate time. The ink is absorbed slowly, and the numbers in the calendar are ‘printed ‘ daily. One a day, they are filled with ink until the end of the month. The calendar enhances the perception of time passing and not only signaling it. The aim of the project is to address our senses, rather than the logical and conscious brain.

The ink colors are based on a spectrum, which relate to a “color temperature scale”, each month having a color related to our perception of the weather on that month. The colors range from dark blue in December to three shades of green in spring or orange and red in the summer.

Sayer's work is inspired by the world of illustrative and experimental typography and gives a different dimension to illustration and visual design.

"Much of my work begins as hand-drawn images or letter-pressed prints which I usually then scan and manipulate digitally. I also often work across several sheets of semi-transparent paper to plan out or structure work in order to create a relationship between layers of information. I also use a lot of paper cutting techniques, which I do by hand with a scalpel. The forms are created very much instinctively. Although I do have a general idea of how I want it to look, much of the layered cutting grows naturally with each piece informing the position of the next.

The prevalence of mundane digital fonts is forcing designers to cast their nets wider in order to create typography with a unique voice. This includes experimenting with more unusual or 'analogue' materials and processes before re-incorporating them into a format suitable for dissemination across the rapidly advancing digital communications channels. I feel that this is a very exciting time for design, where traditional craft methods are not only being revisited but are also combined with complex digital processes in order to create truly innovative and astounding, yet still very tactile, work. The key to truly forward thinking design is to harness both the capabilities of digital technology and the important lessons we learn from traditional materials and processes and combine them using our own unique creative personality. Computers are tools to be used. They do not create beautiful design - people do.

I have always tended to stick to a more monochrome colour palette, I suspect due to the influence of my photographer father who works predominantly using black and white film. I adore colour but often find it difficult to use in my own work. Perhaps it is because I always end up thinking about it far too much! I often find that the times when I use colour most effectively are those when it appears accidentally."

Pentagram partner Domenic Lippa and Sir John Sorrell, chairman of the London Design Festival, have commissioned 20 UK-based graphic designers to create posters with a London theme for this year’s event. The posters will be on display in the V&A’s Sackler Centre during the festival. Temperly London's Spring 2010 Video Lookbook

In celebration of the 25 years of London Fashion Week, Temperley London partnered with NY based production studio LEGS (part of the Milk Studios) and created this 12-foot-tall Circus Zoetrope to showcased their Spring 2010 collection. It was unveiled last week during New York Fashion Week & is now in London for London Fashion week.

Q&A with Legs on the Temperley London Spring 2010 Zoetrope.

 Tell me how Legs hooked up with Temperley, what this project is & how it came to be. 
 
Temperley was looking for a new way, using film, to exhibit their circus inspired line for fashion week. They found us through their relationship with MILK STUDIOS (Legs is part of The Milk Group) and asked us to pitch on alternative ways to show a collection involving a film installation instead of the traditional runway show. From there, we developed the zoetrope idea and Alice Temperley fell in love with it. 

It's been fun to see the concept through several mediums - there’s a physical traveling zoetrope installation, a portrait film featuring the zoetrope and animated film loops, the stills pulled from the Red Camera shoot are the ad campaign, and there’s also an interactive zoetrope online at the Temperley website.  
 
 Why a zoetrope? Whose idea was it. 
 
  It was Greg Brunkalla (Legs) initial idea and then we all collaborated on developing the style, direction and design of the piece. The concept came out of thinking about the earliest forms of filmmaking, which worked perfectly with the circus and vaudevillian imagery that inspired the Temperley line. We built a 12-foot-tall carousel inspired sculptural structure that combined rudimentary film loops with modern projection technology to showcase ten circus acts while at the same time displaying 15 different Temperley looks. 
 
 Tell me about how you built the zoetrope.
 
  The zoetrope took about a month to build. We had our crack team of artists, engineers and builders, led by Jeff Everett and Irfan Akdag, designing and constructing this huge 10-tiered machine that moves around and around like a tall, ornate carousel. Jeff’s team converted our back office in to a massive wood shop where the cylindrical layers were cut and made to rotate. The process was challenging because Jeff had to design the zoetrope to be able to be taken apart in pieces and reconstructed again to perfection in order to be shipped and presented in London for London fashion week directly after the New York fashion week presentation was finished. 
 
 Georgie Greville and Geremy Jasper (Legs) teamed up to shoot the loops in two days at MILK studios using two different circus tent inspired backdrops and lots of props and practical lighting accessories to add to the theatrical nature of the scenes. Afterwards, we made 5 second stop motion sequences out of 60 unique frames from each scene with the goal of making each loop as smooth yet theatrical as possible. We housed a video camera in an old fashioned medium format camera box and attached it to a remote-controlled pulley system that moved up and down the Zoetrope, filming each layer one at a time. 
 
 We were confident that the quality of the image from HVX camera to projection would lend a vintage film feel to the image and we were really pleased with the results. To capture the animated loops we shot at 12 fps with the shutter at 1/1000. The natural movement of the zoetrope also added an authentic feel to the films. 
 
 Included is Greg’s initial drawing of how we envisioned the zoetrope to work, to Jeff Everett’s Production Design watercolor and a picture of an original zoetrope, which only contains one loop. The circus themed images that loops were inspired by Fellini, Muybridge and early American Gypsy Circuses.

The Amateur Music Production project by Yuri Suzuki was an one afternoon event during the exhibtion “Coalition of Amateurs” at the Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg. Yuri recorded music with 3 punk bands from Luxembourg (Tvesla, Takemeunderground (myspace.com/takemeundergroundband) and Yegussa) and pressed vinyls all during that one afternoon. I really like this DIY style. Unfortunately there is no audio sample available of a record playing.

The Ever Evolving Catalogue

An unusual show is currently taking place at the Jerwood Space in London: three artists have taken over the gallery and, starting from nothing, have been building an exhibition over the past month. The catalogue for the show, designed by The Partners, is similarly experimental. Filmmaker Steven Eastwood, sculptor Jock Mooney and painter Mia Taylor are all working at Jerwood in Laboratory, exposing their art practice to visitors. In order to reflect the unpredictable nature of the show The Partners have created a catalogue that also evolves daily, and neatly combines print with digital media. The catalogue uses content from the Laboratory blog, where the artists, curator, resident writer, photographer and designers all post updates on the exhibition. Each post on the blog is printed out and then added to the catalogue that is on show at the gallery for visitors to read. As each blog post prints out at a different size, no two pages in the catalogue are alike.

Now in 3D!

They’ve fitted a N900 inside a Viewmaster, when you move the Viewmaster to the left or the right a switch is triggered. The signal is then passed on through an arduino board and a bluetooth signal to the N900. The camera of the N900 takes now 2 images, a few centimeters apart. The two images are colored red and blue and superimposed and displayed on the screen of the N900, so when you look through the Viewmaster you’ll see a 3D image.

Talk & Text

A Nokia N900 and an Arduino are hidden inside a Speak & Spell. The keys are connected to the arduino which sends the signals over bluetooth to the N900. So you can write and send a text message using a Speak & Spell.

Leave a Message

An Arduino connected to the Rolodex detects the position of the wheel and sends that information over bluetooth to the N900. Each position indicates a specific contact. Without touching your N900, you bring up the contact you need to the screen of the N900.

Phone FM

You can send a text message to your phone and it will read the artist’s name and send that information to last.fm. MP3’s will start streaming and the cover art will appear on the screen. The N900 has a build-in FM transmitter, the signal will be picked up by any radio nearby when it’s set to the right station.

PUSH N900 is a competion organised by Nokia to promote it’s new N900 smartphone. Everyone is invited to come up with projects how you could hack or mod the N900 and its open-source Maemo operating system. You have to submit your idea by October 11th, a jury will then decide who will get a N900, funding and support to make them real. Hyper and Tinker it! were asked to develop some sample projects. They decided to use 4 objects from the 80’s: the Viewmaster, the Rolodex, an FM Radio and the Speak & Spell.

The Session

The Session is a collective of eight designers and artists that make a thematic, interdisciplinary fanzine since September 2007. The Session manufactures theme-zines in the finest DIY spirit, serving serious readers through a distribution network consisting of dealers. (…) The Session takes place for one day every second month, during which works around a specific theme are being made. The group uses different methods and media, from drawing to research to songwriting.

The members of the group are taking turns in deciding the theme to work with, members can invite other people to join a session. The one deciding for the theme is the publisher of the issue and responsible for editing, design and (re-)production. This means that every issue will look different, that every issue will be compiled with a different approach and produced in a different way, testing out formats and techniques.

The special edition, The Last Session, around the theme Endism is not only a publication, but also takes the form of an exhibition, a cinema and a radio station, from 18 September to 18 October 2009, in Amsterdam.

Veruschka was born in 1939 in East Prussia as Vera Gottliebe Anna Gräfin von Lehndorff-Steinort. For a short time, she enjoyed a wealthy lifestyle residing in East Prussia in a large house on an enormous estate that had been in her family for centuries. Her mother was the former Countess Gottliebe von Kalnein (b. 1913). Her father was a German count and army reserve officer who became a key member of the German Resistance, reportely after witnessing Jewish children being beaten and killed. When Veruschka was five years old, Heinrich Graf von Lehndorff-Steinort was executed for attempting to assassinate Adolf Hitler in the July 20 Plot. After his death, the remaining family members spent their times in labor camps until the end of World War II. By the end of the war, her family was left homeless.

She studied art in Hamburg and then moved to Florence, where she was discovered at age 20 by the photographer Ugo Mulas and became a full-time model. In Paris, she met Eileen Ford, head of the prestigious Ford Modeling Agency. In 1961, she moved to New York City, but soon returned to Munich. She had also garnered attention when she made a brief five minute appearance in the 1966 cult film Blowup by Michelangelo Antonioni.

She once worked with Salvador Dalí and photographer Peter Beard, who took her to Kenya. At her peak, she earned as much as $10,000 a day. In 1975, however, she departed from the fashion industry due to disagreements with Grace Mirabella, the newly appointed editor-in-chief of Vogue. Occasionally, she still appears on catwalks, for example, as a guest model in the Melbourne Fashion Festival in 2000 in Australia.
